In a 2021 Gallup polling, about 3 in 4 Americans said they were affiliated with a religious faith
The need to belong to a group is a fundamental part of human beings. Affiliation with a religious sect can provide comfort, community, structure, and guidance about the purpose of life. In addition, many people have fears about what will happen to them not only in this life but in the afterlife.
Religion can provide a community of fellowship and communion with like-minded people; it can feel like a safety net when life has so many mysteries. Going to church can help with feeling close to God, becoming a better person, and finding comfort in troubled times. Other people find that religious affiliation helps them to have a moral compass about what is right or wrong.
Belonging is a need that human beings seek. Religious communities provide a structure of mores and a sense of connection with other people that share the same values. Religion is a longstanding tradition that has brought people together from different social classes since the beginning. It doesn’t matter if you were rich or poor if you were of the same belief system.
Structure helps us to feel safe during uncertain times of war, violence, natural disasters, and economic hardship. Many external factors can feel overwhelming and scary, but believing in God or a higher power can give us hope to endure the struggles. By holding onto the beliefs that are taught in church, we strive for meaning and purpose in life. For this purpose, we structure our life around it. Our daily conduct, how we treat others, helping and providing service to people in need, is a conduit of living a Christian life. The things mentioned and countless other reasons are why so many people affiliate with a church.
